On behalf of the Australian Guardianship and Administration Council (AGAC), I invite you to join us for the 2019 Australian Guardianship and Administration Council conference, to be held in Canberra on 14-15 March. The theme of the conference is ‘Upholding rights, preventing abuse and promoting autonomy’ and we expect to welcome more than 250 people to join us at this important event. This will include people with disability, practitioners in the health, guardianship, elder abuse and social services sectors, policy-makers, lawyers, and academics, among others.

This is a time of unprecedented change in the adult safeguarding environment.

• The NDIS, widely recognised as the most significant social welfare reform in Australia since the advent of Medicare, is being rolled out nationally, and is bringing significant improvements to the lives of many people with disability. But it is also being accompanied by new safeguarding arrangements and new ‘consumer choice’ challenges for many people with significant cognitive disability.

• Elder abuse is a topic now of national significance, with the Commonwealth Government leading the development of a national elder abuse plan and auspicing a number of important reform initiatives, including work that will lead to us knowing the prevalence of elder abuse. On this score we are delighted to welcome the Commonwealth Attorney-General’s Department as a major sponsor of this conference.

• Guardianship reviews are either underway, or have been carried out in the recent past, in most Australian jurisdictions.

• Human rights developments are seeing us recalibrate the makeup and implementation of our protective laws, with ground-breaking developments occurring, for instance, in the field of supported decision-making.

Our conference will showcase new thinking in all of these fields. If you want to be part of the conversation about these and other developments, then we look forward to welcoming you in Canberra in March 2019.
